Xiaomi Canceled Its Ultra-Thin Smartphone at the Last Minute

Xiaomi reportedly came very close to launching an ultra-thin smartphone, but the company decided to cancel the project shortly before mass production. According to company executives, the design required too many compromises that could negatively affect the overall user experience.

On May 16, Xiaomi held a live broadcast featuring company president Lu Weibing. During the stream, the company introduced several new products and answered questions from viewers. One user asked why Xiaomi never released an ultra-thin smartphone similar to models recently introduced by competitors such as Apple and Samsung.

Lu Weibing confirmed that Xiaomi had indeed been developing such a device. The project had already passed the planning and research stages, and mass production was reportedly close to starting. However, the company ultimately decided to abandon the smartphone before launch.

According to Weibing, maintaining an extremely thin form factor would have required serious compromises. In particular, he mentioned that battery life and performance would inevitably suffer due to the limited internal space available inside the device.

Rumors about Xiaomi’s ultra-thin smartphone first appeared earlier this year. Several well-known insiders, including Ice Universe, shared alleged specifications and even showcased prototype images of the device online.

While Xiaomi may have canceled this specific project, the growing trend toward slimmer flagship smartphones suggests the company could revisit the idea in the future once technology allows for better balance between design, battery capacity, and performance.
